Memorial Tribute to Moises Funes, January 9, 2008

A year has past. In the hearts and on the minds of many, we remember a young man who was committed to improving his community, but it was not in vain. It takes everyone of us to work in solidarity, and eventually little by little every small improvement is a huge victory for those who are less fortunate. On January 9, 2008 the town of Alegria mourned the tragic loss of their Mayor Moises Funes and his assistant Zulma Rivera. Moises had the vision to help restore justice and dignity to the poorest people. When an Ottawa delegation travelled to Alegria in the spring 2008, they could feel the heart felt pain this small community was enduring and prompted the composition of the music and lyrics of the song **”Hasta la Victoria Siempre”. The following pictures pay tribute to a man who worked so hard for his community.

“Hasta la Victoria Siempre” was composed and lyrics written by Victor Fuentes. This song won first place at the CHIN Ottawa Songwriting Competition in May, 2008.

Savia y Semilla Visit Sick Children

Victor reaquainted with one of his very good musician friends from many years ago, did a quick recruitment and the group with lots of practicing were back in full force (in his spare time!!) for the duration of the journey. They played at Church, Cal-Pipil, private functions, community events, two appearances at Radio Cadena Mi Gente, visited chronically and terminally ill children on the children’s ward at the Benjamin Bloom National Hospital in San Salvador. Sarah’s Mom in Guelph had sent a big box of hand made Teddys which were given to the children along with balloons and candies.
